Up until seven years ago, country music superstar Tim McGraw was suffering from substance addiction and that included when he was performing. During his new interview with Men’s Health Magazine, Faith Hill’s husband admits that he partied entirely too hard for the majority of his career until his wife told him it was time to stop. “When your wife tells you it’s gone too far, that’s a big wake-up call,” the singer admits. He goes on to state that he was faced with a decision to continue to abuse substances including alcohol (amongst others) or lose everything he had in terms of his family. He chose to keep his family, which includes his country singing wife, Faith Hill, and their three daughters now 12, 15 and 17.
McGraw admits that he lived in fear that he’d end in trouble or even die of alcohol abuse, going so far as to compare himself to Keith Whitley, the late country singer who passed away in 1989 from alcohol poisoning. “…You drink and get onstage, and all of a sudden you feel confident and powerful,” states McGraw in his interview with the magazine.
Today, the country star is healthy and happy – with his family and minus a few unwanted pounds. He’s healthier and fitter than ever before, and his career does not seem to be slowing down. In fact, he’s about to start touring before his new album, Sundown Heaven Town, is released in September. Aside from his singing career, McGraw has had a few roles on the big screen, including portraying Sean Tuohy, the adoptive father of NFL superstar Michael Oher in the movie The Blind Side, which won actress Sandra Bullock an Oscar for her role as Leigh Anne Tuohy.
McGraw and Hill will celebrate their 18th wedding anniversary this coming October, after wedding in 1996 in McGraw’s Louisiana hometown.
